I just re-read Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary, as I was thinking of taking in the movie version. I first read the book when it came out in paperback in 2022. I had also read and loved The Martian and looked forward to being humbled and surprised by the Robinson-Crusoe-meets-CalTech solutions to problems. Alas, my math and physics skills are so lacking that the science in Project Hail Mary left me dimmed in the astrophage and hurrying on by. I was also not thrilled that (spoiler alert) the alien he encounters takes the form it does. I know…there are only so many choices there and maybe ET was busy elsewhere. But it leads to a lot of really weird complications and adaptations that struck me as contrived … Of course, you say, this is science fiction! Yup, you’re right. Still worth reading I think and I will try to make it out to the theatre.
